Building Bright Futures From the Very Beginning
About Khumbulani Early Childhood Development (ECD)
Khumbulani Centre was established in the year 2000 in response to the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Khayelitsha, Western Cape. Initially operating as a soup kitchen, the Centre provided vital meals to community members—many of whom were HIV-positive mothers and their families. During this time, Khumbulani Centre identified the urgent need for psychosocial support among those infected and affected by HIV. In response, the Centre created a safe space and support group environment while beneficiaries waited for their meals. This community-driven initiative laid the
foundation for more comprehensive services to address the broader challenges facing vulnerable individuals and families.
Recognising the lack of early childhood education opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, Khumbulani Centre expanded its services by establishing an Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre. This centre caters to children aged six months to six years who had no access to formal
education, thereby ensuring that vulnerable children receive care, protection, and early learning support in a nurturing environment.

Khumbulani Aftercare
The after-care initiative at the Khumbulani Educare Center provides assistance to help students develop their abilities in every subject and boost their computer skills. These learners come from underprivileged backgrounds, so establishing a solid educational foundation will shift their mindset and motivate them to work diligently for a better future. Certain schools do not provide computer access, leading students to participate in the aftercare program for practical experience. Numerous individuals struggle to complete their homework at home because of an inappropriate setting, so they choose to be at Khumbulani.
